Autism is a complex developmental disability and neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. It can result in mild to severe difficulties in learning and thinking. It can also impact the immune, endocrine, nervous & gastrointestinal systems. People with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. Boys are four times more likely to have autism than girls and Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability and according to the CDC 1 in 68 children are now diagnosed and most people don’t realize that those numbers are based on children born in 2002. More children will be diagnosed this year than Cancer, Diabetes, Downs Syndrome and AIDS combined! The fastest growing genetic disorders increase at an approximate rate of 1% per 100 years, Autism is growing at a much greater rate. With the epidemic rising so quickly there are a number of different autism related therapies, special diets/supplements, and some organizations specializing in early intervention methods for parents to consider.
