10 things you should NEVER say to an Autism Parent

All special needs parents know what it’s like to hear those cringe worthy comments that uninformed people sometimes make. I am pretty lucky, most of the people in my life are WELL AWARE of autism because I make it my job to teach them but every once in awhile someone will say something to me that makes me wanna pull out my hair! Here are 10 things you should NEVER say to a parent of a child with autism, in my humble opinion. (Meaning, I don’t need hate mail if you don’t agree. These are things that have annoyed me personally.)

1. Aww he’s autistic?! I think that’s so cute!

Cute? Really??!

2. So is your kid like Rainman? Does he have a photographic memory?

3. Don’t worry, she will catch up. All kids do things on their own time

4. Can’t you keep your kid quiet?!

5. My advice is…. (unless you’re an autism parent, therapist, para, or Dr. DON’T give us your advice)

6. You need to just try to feed him a bigger variety!

7. Well at least he can……

8. God must have known you could handle this.

9. She can’t be autistic, she is way too smart.

10. I think everyone is a little Autistic.

Individuals who have autism are human beings first and foremost. Be respectful.

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it
or something. I think that you could do with a few pics
to drive the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is great blog.
A great read. I will definitely be back.
