Since receiving my son’s autism diagnosis and going through experiences with my own health issues, I have done years of research and reading on detoxing the body of harmful chemicals and toxins. All of my autism research has lead me to the undeniable fact that everything that goes into the body has an impact, whether it be a positive or a negative one. This cheat sheet is my own personal compilation of info I’ve used for myself and my family. I decided to publish it publicly after continually being asked what we have tried with our son. I am not a doctor or a nurse and I don’t offer medical advice. I am a mother with an autistic child and a deep interest in natural health care.

Okay then! Now that I’m all done with my disclaimer, I’ll just get right to it! First off,


I prefer to do everything slowly so there aren’t a lot of side effects to suffer through. A good way to start any detox is to begin eliminating alcohol, coffee, refined sugars, processed foods, cigarettes, and saturated fats, all of which act as toxins in the body and are obstacles to your healing process. You can then go a step further with this and limit or eliminate the following as well-

artificial colors and flavors


artificial scents (think shampoos, deodorants, lotions, etc) The skin is NOT a barrier. It absorbs whatever you put on it and sends it straight into your body.

toxic household cleaning supplies

airborne toxins (paint, nail polish, pesticides, gasoline etc)

Vitamins and Epsom salt baths will make this whole process go A LOT more smoothly. Magnesium (epsom salt) helps to keep things in your body running more efficiently.

Dr. Rosemary Waring found that a majority of people on the autism spectrum have a deficiency in a key detoxification pathway.

Waring found that most people with autism conditions have a deficiency in a key detoxification pathway involved with sulfation. The enzyme involved is phenol sulfur-transferase (PST), which is essential to the process of breaking down and removing certain toxins from the body. Waring postulates that symptoms arise from an inadequate supply of usable sulfate ions, rather than from a deficiency of the metabolic enzyme itself’. -from wikipedia

So, in layman’s terms, Epsom Salt baths benefit people with autism because they help to raise the sulfate levels in the body which can assist in making the detoxification pathway flow properly again. Sulfate strengthens the walls of the digestive tract. Epsom salts can help a lot of other individuals as well. I encourage everyone to research the benefits of Epsom Salt!

Ask your doctor if it is safe for you to use Epsom Salt if you have diabetes, kidney disease, an eating disorder, or if you are on a low magnesium diet.


Build your liver and overall health by taking herbs such as-

dandelion root

burdock and milk thistle

green tea.

And eating fresh fruits and veggies such as-





green leafy vegetables

Also, take plenty of vitamin C, which helps your body produce glutathione, a liver compound that scares away those nasty toxins.


DE & ACV (diatomaceous earth & apple cider vinegar)- Detox & Overall Health. I touched on these two products in another article here.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids (fish oil, flax seed, algae oils, etc)- Anti-inflammatory, Promotes Brain Function

Probiotics- Immune, Overall Heath,& Digestive Support

Coconut Oil- Energy & Immune Support More here.

Juicing- Nutrient Absorbtion. Overall Health.

Echinacea- Quicker Immune response. Great for use during & after detox.

Dandelion Root- Liver Stimulant, Kidney Health

Elderberry- Rich in antioxidants that support the immune system and fights free radicals

Bentonite Clay- Detoxing & Re-mineralizing

Essential Oils- Oils said to promote detox functions include- oregano, juniper, lemon, grapefruit, fennel, bergamot, rose geranium, eucalyptus, cedarwood, basil, bitter orange, chamomile, corriander, helichrysum, myrrh, parsley seed, jasmine, hyssop, frankincense, niaouli, pink grapefruit, white sage, nutmeg, & blue tansy. Oils for removing metals in the body include- Cilantro, ledum, helichrysum, celery seed, idaho balsam fir, coriander, & mellisa. Activated Charcoal- Absorbs poisons from the GI tract. It’s estimated to reduce absorption of poisonous substances nearly to 60%. It is commonly used for food poisoning or people keep it on hand in case a toxic substance is swallowed. It can also be used for whitening teeth. Charcoal is not known to be toxic but it shouldn’t be taken within 2 hours of taking meds or vitamins. It will absorb them as well.

Sweat- Naturally push toxins out of the body through perspiration

Fasting- I recently read about doing an immune system reboot by fasting for 3 days. I am dying to try this but I havent yet so i cant really tell you much about it but here’s the article I read.

TONS AND TONS OF WATER!!- Flushes and cleans the system out more quickly
