AUTISM- Your opinion is not my opinion and that’s okay.

AUTISM- Your opinion is not my opinion and that’s okay.

One thing I’ve learned about autism over the years is that everyone has a different opinion about it and everyone is entitled to their own personal view and stance. We all know Autism is a SPECTRUM, meaning it has many different facets, angles, and shades. If you have met ONE person with autism then you have met ONE person with autism. Autistic people are no different when it comes to individuality. People, in general, are like snowflakes, no two exactly the same. Your journey may not be my journey. Your child’s journey may not be my child’s journey. Your truth may not be my truth.

This is okay.

For some odd reason though, this little tidbit has been missed by a BIG majority of the autism community that I have come into contact with. In the end, and in the grand scheme of things, I don’t really blame these people for the way this all works though, I blame the DSM. In my opinion, we (the autism community) could all really benefit from the spectrum being broken down into smaller pieces so that the different types of autism that exist can be better explained and understood by everyone.

We have to stop being judgemental of other autism families.

You can’t run around preaching acceptance and love if you are being un-accepting of someone else’s view.

Just some thoughts of mine on this chilly Wednesday afternoon.

I saw this on pbs tonight! I cannot tell you how much I love seeing autism stuff on tv that doesn’t make me cringe! This little boy reminds me so much of Connor and the way he speaks. Their conversation sounds sooo much like conversations we have. I love her honesty with him.

Autism Peeps this is VERY important!

Autism Peeps this is VERY important!

http://www.dsm5asdsurvey.org/ Your input is crucial!

“The proposed criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorders in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual – 5th Edition (DSM-5) have created some controversy.  The primary change is the combination of three current diagnoses, Autistic Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified, and Asperger’s Disorder into a single diagnosis with three levels of severity.
Also, five studies (McPartland and Volkmar, 2012; Worley and Matson, 2012; Matson et al. 2012; Gibbs et al. 2012; and Taheri and Perry, 2012) have shown that a significant number of people who currently have a spectrum diagnosis would not be diagnosed as having ASD using the new criteria.

Concerns that have risen in the community include, but are not limited to, the following:

1) How will the new criteria affect services?

2) How will the new criteria affect insurance coverage?

3) How will the new criteria affect autism epidemiology regarding prevalence, which is already highly debated?

4) What will happen to those who no longer meet criteria for an autism spectrum diagnosis?

5) How will the new criteria impact adults?

6) How will the new criteria perform in a wide range of clinical settings around the world?”

Help me support freedom of choice for our children’s health

Help me support freedom of choice for our children’s health

https://www.facebook.com/WTPWV

First go to that page and click away at the like button, that in itself shows these parents the support that they deserve.

WE THE PARENTS is a grassroots movement of families in West Virginia asking the legislature for non-medical vaccine exemptions, just as 48 other states!

It breaks my heart that this has gotten to this point….If you do not have a Facebook account you can read a couple of their posts below-

“A lot is going on in West Virginia! Students all over the state are being refused school entry, even though they are in compliance with WV State Code 16-3-4. They are not being permitted a public or private school education because they have not complied with vaccines added through “Interpretive Rule.” A rule which has been used twice by the WV Bureau for Public Health when our elected officials did not pass a bill to add the vaccines. Cases range from a kindergartner no longer allowed to step foot in her school to a 17 year old who goes to school daily where he must sit in the office. We the Parents will not back down. We will stand united.”

“A kindergarten student who is in compliance with WV State Code regarding vaccines will not be permitted school entry tomorrow morning in Ohio County. Why? Because she does not have her 4th DTaP shot. A shot that was added through “Interpretive Rule” by the WV Bureau for Public Health when the WV Legislature did not pass a bill to add the additional vaccines.

In fact, provisional enrollment for 7th and 12th graders also ends tomorrow in Ohio County. And all of these children will be counted as unexcused absences.

These shots are NOT required by state law. But it is keeping children from their public education. We hope you’re as outraged as we are.”

Oh back to school, back to school!

Oh back to school, back to school!

It’s almost that time again! Yep, that’s right, back to school time!! A lot of moms I know are hearing choirs of angels singing in unison, “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!” ..but not me. I am one of those moms that is sad my lil guy wont be here to entertain me during the day. My bug is also going to a new school this year! Luckily he will still be attending with all the kids he has known since kindergarten. I think it’s the dumbest thing ever but in our town the fourth grade is no longer elementary school.

Bug has just started to adjust to being home all day for summer and now it’s time to send him back into a totally new routine all together, and in a new school to boot. I hope the familiarity of the kids will be enough to get us through…I am definitely hopeful! Fourth grade here we come!!!!
